    The Steel Joist Institute is a not-for-profit organization. Besides setting standards for the steel joist industry, SJI works closely with the major building code bodies throughout the country help to develop code resolutions regarding steel joists and joist girders.

  • Chippewa Valley Technical College - Eau Claire, WI
    Students enrolled in this program receive training in structural and related drafting, primarily as it applies to the construction of commercial and industrial buildings. This two-year associate degree program emphasizes the development of both manual and computer aided drafting skills. Architectural drafting, structural drafting, surveying, structural analysis, construction concrete and steel, estimating and building methods are all courses which help students understand technical data and the proper use of materials in the construction of commercial and industrial buildings.
  • Southwestern Community College - Creston, IA
    Southwestern Community College located in Creston, IA offers a diploma in Structural Drafting (one year) and an Associates of Applied Science degree in Structural Engineering Technology (two years). These programs turn out "entry level" steel detailers in May and June each year. Principal areas of study are Plan Reading, Applied Trigonometry & Geometry, AISC's Manuals, and Miscellaneous & Structural Steel Detailing. Students learn to detail manually first, then use straight AutoCAD. Detailing programs are used in the second year.

Includes the proper views and dimensioning practices for columns, stairways, handrails, cross-bracing, tank bottom layouts, tank shell and tank framing drawings. Also introduces general estimating procedures. Upon completion, students should be ready for entry-level employment as a structural steel detailer.

    Structural Drafting is a drafting course designed to give the student the skills necessary to function as a detail draftsperson. The student will be involved with the preparation of detail drawings in the areas of steel, wood, and concrete as they are used in residential, commercial, and industrial structural construction. The emphasis will be placed on the preparation of structural arrangement drawings, connection details, and shop drawings.
